From the imperial palace complex (bottom left), the Claudian aqueduct snakes out. The larger columned building to the north of the palace is the temple of Venus and Roma, to the left of which is the basilica of Constantine. Due west is the Colosseum, south-east of which is the temple of Claudius. Beyond the Colosseum, to the north-east, are the baths of Trajan. The sheer size of some of these buildings can be judged from the fact that the distance on the ground between the left and right edges of this illustration is about half a mile.
